History

Barre City's department answers fire and medical calls, and runs the ambulance, in a coverage area of about four square miles. About a fifth of its calls overlap with another, which means calling in off-duty staff.

  1. 2023

Keith Cushman becomes chief. In April a fire destroys a downtown building; mutual aid keeps it from spreading to neighbours as close as two feet away. In July the city floods, and crews answer more than 50 calls in 12 hours.

  2. 2024

The department reaches full staffing for the first time in over a year, buys new rescue tools to replace a 20-year-old set, and orders a new ambulance.

Calls

Most calls are medical. The department also runs a sharps disposal programme, collecting about 1,000 gallons of needles a year from five sites around the city.

Calls for service by fiscal year

Fiscal years end in June. From the fire department's section of each city annual report.

Barre City in Washington County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 1 here, 22 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for joining, burn permits, budget. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
