Built to be useful, not to be looked at.
Almost no fire station in Vermont was designed to be admired. A concrete-block bay behind the town office, a barn with the doors cut wider, a pole building with the department's name stencilled over the bay — they are built to get a truck out fast and to be paid for by a town of two thousand people. Set 274 of them side by side and that plainness becomes the point: a century of how small places build when nobody is watching.
The service here is overwhelmingly volunteer — more than two hundred departments, most of them staffed by neighbours, working out of buildings scattered across 196 towns. Nobody had ever put them all in one place.
Three of us build and keep this: JA, NJ and Tom, who was a junior firefighter in high school on Long Island and has been interested in every part of the job since.
Going to look is the only way to be sure. The state lists 7 fire stations in Colchester; 3 of them turned out to be a food shelf, the water department and somebody's outbuilding. Swanton and Highgate run stations the state file doesn't mention at all. Every correction here came from standing in front of the building.
It is meant to give something back to the fire service, in whatever form turns out to be useful — a record that didn't exist, a photograph of a station nobody had taken, a correction to the state's file.
Station locations come from VT E911 / VCGI and OpenStreetMap. Points the state still lists as fire stations but which no longer are get removed as they come to light — 6 so far.
