History

Most of Brookfield's calls are crashes, so vehicle rescue tools are a priority. The department says it needs more young people: anyone can visit and get involved.

  1. 2023

The department celebrates its 75th anniversary, and mourns Ed Koren, a member for 35 years. The July flood keeps it busy checking on neighbours, closing roads and pumping basements.

  2. 2024

Three more sets of bunker gear put every member in new protective equipment. Two neighbouring departments give an air compressor and storage bottles, and the department buys a fill station for its own air tanks. A Genesis battery-powered jaws of life is added. Kevin Wheatley steps down after ten years as chief and stays on as a member.

Calls

Crashes made up nearly half of the calls the department listed for 2024.

Brookfield in Orange County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 1 here, 24 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Money

The fire department is a line in the town's general fund.

Fiscal year 2025 (budget)
Fire department $58,400

Fiscal 2024's budget was $47,050; actual spending was $56,875.07.

Recent years
Fiscal 2023 (actual) $41,890
Fiscal 2024 (actual) $56,875

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for joining, burn permits. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
