History

Castleton's volunteers answer vehicle crashes, fire alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, downed lines and storm calls, and help neighbouring towns at structure fires through the Rutland County mutual aid group.

  1. 1946

The Castleton Fire Department is established.

  2. 2021

Emergency calls reported for the 2020–21 town year.

    133 calls that year

  3. 2023

In the year to June, fire destroys the Gilmore's Home Center hardware store. Nine departments and Rutland Regional assist, with over 100 firefighters on scene and only minor injuries. Castleton also helps at eight structure fires through mutual aid.

  4. 2024

A refurbished tower truck is about to enter service, a new mini pumper is on order, and a 50% state grant pays for lightweight wildland gear. The fire warden issues 97 burn permits.

    145 calls that year

Castleton in Rutland County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 2 here, 36 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for joining, burn permits, budget. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
