History

Chester's firefighters train at least three times a month, and the department is equipped for swiftwater, ice, and low- and high-angle rope rescue. The Yosemite Engine Company, a nonprofit of current and past firefighters, raises money for training and equipment.

  1. 2024

Chief Wilson retires in January; acting chief Ben Whalen leaves in May to become Ludlow's first full-time chief, and Scott Richardson, a former Springfield deputy chief with 45 years in public safety, takes over in September. On 10 July the swiftwater team is sent north for the floods, making three rescues in Fayston, one of them a dog, and a rescue and two evacuations in Moretown over 24 hours.

    190 calls that year

  2. 2025

The fire department and the Chester Ambulance Service become one, with the ambulance chief as deputy chief for EMS; together they answer 1,074 calls. A 2023 International/E-One pumper-tanker carrying 3,000 gallons arrives in May, bought largely with a $475,000 federal grant the members wrote. Five members train in Oregon for Rope Technician certification.

Chester in Windsor County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 1 here, 27 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for joining, burn permits, budget. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
