Chittenden's volunteers built their own firehouse on land, money, materials and labour given by the town's residents, and it still stands on the same piece of land.
1956
A barn is lost to fire, and townspeople vote to create a volunteer fire department and buy an engine.
1957
The department forms with 52 members and buys a military-surplus 1941 American LaFrance from the Ethan Allen Air Force Base for $50.
1980
Chittenden First Response is founded to provide medical coverage; a response vehicle follows in 1983.
1993
An addition gives the firehouse a second-floor meeting room and three more apparatus bays.
2024
Capt. Charley Parker, a member for over 40 years, collapses at the firehouse after returning from a barn fire on 8 July and dies. The department unveils a marble memorial to him in July 2025.
2025
A Freightliner pumper-tanker with 1,500 gallons and a 1,250 gpm pump joins the fleet.
Chittenden in Rutland County. Every fire station in the county is marked —
1 here, 37 in neighbouring towns, which is
who turns out on a mutual aid call.
Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and
village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into
the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the
boundary itself.
In an emergency dial 911. These are business lines.
Burning
Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.
For residents

Not recorded yet
Nothing is written up here for joining, burn permits, call volume, budget.
Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this
department, tell us and it goes on the record with its
source named.
