History

Glover's volunteers recruit continuously; any member can tell you how to join.

  1. 1959

The department is founded, governed by a board of trustees.

  2. 2023

Long-time Chief Allen Matthews retires in May and First Assistant Chief Job Breitmeyer succeeds him. On 10 July the Barton River floods: the department answers 12 locations in three hours, opens an overnight shelter at the fire station and spends days pumping basements. In the fall the bylaws, unchanged since 1999, are revised. The Terry Farrell Fund donates hydraulic Jaws of Life, used a week later to free a crash victim, and Underhill-Jericho Fire Department gives stabilisation jacks.

Glover in Orleans County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 2 here, 16 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Money

The fire department is funded through the town's emergency services budget.

2023 (budget)
Fire department $27,500

The fire department spent $23,728.70 in 2023; its 2024 budget is $35,000.

Reserve
Fire department reserve fund, 2023 $7,500

Paid into the reserve in full.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for joining, burn permits. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
