History

Grafton's fire company and its Rescue Squad are separate volunteer organisations that share members and the firehouse east of the village. Both cover Athens by contract and raise most of their own operating money.

  1. 1847

Newspapers report firefighting efforts in Grafton.

  2. 1924

The Grafton Fire Company is officially approved at Town Meeting. Its first fundraiser is a square dance.

  3. 1925

A garage on Kidder Hill Road houses a hand-drawn pumper, built around 1830, and a hand-drawn chemical tank; both are now at the Grafton Historical Society.

  4. 1933

The first motorised fire truck: a converted Cadillac touring car.

  5. 1938

The old schoolhouse on Main Street becomes the firehouse.

  6. 1981

The Fire and Rescue Auxiliary holds its first October tag sale for the department.

  7. 1992

The present firehouse on Route 121 East opens, named for longtime Chief Stanley Mack.

  8. 2024

Emergency calls in the fiscal year to June: 34 in Grafton, 10 in Athens and 5 mutual aid. A grant buys a brush insert for the UTV. The department marks 100 years with a community square dance.

Grafton in Windham County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 1 here, 29 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Working here

New members may join at any time. The company is headed by a chief, assistant chief, captain and two lieutenants, under the Grafton Firefighters Association.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for burn permits, budget. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
