History

Hartford's department provides fire protection and paramedic-level ambulance service, and is an all-hazards team: confined space, heights, structural collapse, swift water and trench rescue, plus a mobile support unit for Vermont Emergency Management.

  1. 1982

The Quechee station, Station 2, opens and is dedicated.

  2. 2004

Hartford becomes the first fire department in New England to be accredited by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International.

  3. 2024

47 fires, 1,879 EMS and rescue calls, and 768 service calls and alarms. The swift water team rescues more than 24 people and pets in Barre, Groton and Lyndonville during the storms.

    2,694 calls that year

  4. 2024

On Town Meeting Day voters approve a $1.3 million bond to expand Station 2.

  5. 2025

The expanded Station 2 reopens on 30 July, staffed around the clock by two firefighters with an engine and an ambulance. A community nurse programme, begun in December 2024, is running; three firefighters are hired, a new ambulance arrives, and 1,012 building inspections are carried out.

    2,967 calls that year

Calls

Seven in ten calls are medical or rescue; fires are under 2%.

  • EMS and rescue 1,879
  • Service calls and alarms 768
  • Fires 47

2,694 calls in the year reported in 2024. The 2025 report gives 2,967, "an increase of 419", which would put the year before at 2,548; the reports do not explain the difference.

Hartford in Windsor County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 2 here, 26 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Nothing is written up here for joining, burn permits. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
