History

Killington's department, volunteer and career, answers fire, rescue and emergency medical calls. The Killington Firefighters Association, formed in 2024, supports it with training, help for fire victims and free CPR classes.

  1. 1955

    The Sherburne Volunteer Fire Department is formed.

  2. 2020

    The department moves into the new Public Safety Building, shared with the police: 14,000 square feet, five apparatus bays, a hose tower and a community room.

  3. 2022

    In March voters make fire and rescue a town department, replacing the private volunteer company.

  4. 2023

    The first full-time paid staff start in January, under the name Killington Fire and Rescue Services.

  5. 2026

    The town advertises for a full-time fire chief in September.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame.
