History

Middlebury's fire department took its current name on 7 May 1920, though fire protection in the town is much older. It is paid on call, and its own technical rescue team handles water, rope and ice rescue.

  1. 1920

The Middlebury Fire Department is established under its current name on 7 May.

  2. 2025

262 calls, 1,825 hours on calls and more than 2,260 hours of training. A $19,500 grant pays for two new dry hydrants, in Otter Creek and the East Middlebury River, put in with the highway department. A $30,000 campaign, led by G. Stone Motors and three other donors, renews the technical rescue team's equipment.

    262 calls that year

  3. 2028

A new utility truck is expected early in the year.

Middlebury in Addison County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 2 here, 21 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Working here

Membership has dipped slightly and the department is looking for people with the time to give. No fire or EMT experience is needed.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for burn permits, budget. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
