History

The department answers crashes, structure and chimney fires, alarms, EMS assists, brush fires and hazardous materials calls, and gives mutual aid to Poultney, Ira and Wallingford. A nonprofit board of trustees oversees its finances and fundraising.

  1. 1950

The first firehouse, a two-bay concrete block building, goes up.

  2. 1984

A large addition joins the firehouse.

  3. 2021

A feasibility study for rebuilding the firehouse puts the total cost at about $2.1 million. A 2018 plan for a new building on the same site had preceded it.

  4. 2024

Assistant Chief Deryk Knipes qualifies as an ice-water rescue technician and instructor; with six more certified technicians, the department becomes a certified ice-water rescue team. A federal grant of $59,357 pays for new hose for every truck.

  5. 2025

The new hose goes into service. The fleet, 1973 to 1995 and fully paid off, would cost about $5.5 million to replace.

Middletown Springs in Rutland County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 1 here, 37 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for joining, burn permits, call volume, budget. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
