History

NewBrook began in 1948 with a dozen volunteers, no firehouse, no trucks and some used hose. It owns its firehouse and trucks outright, takes most of its money from donations and fundraising, and never sends a bill.

  1. 1948

The combined Newfane-Brookline fire district is formed.

  2. 1950

The first firehouse is built on Route 30, half a mile south of the village; around then the department turns a 1942 Army surplus 4WD truck into a 500-gallon pumper. It's still in service as the brush truck.

  3. 1968

    Membership reaches about 100.

  4. 1984

NewBrook becomes a principal EMS provider for the district.

  5. 1993

The present firehouse opens, half a mile north of the village on Route 30.

  6. 2014

FEMA designates the firehouse a Disaster Recovery Center.

Newfane in Windham County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 2 here, 28 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Working here

Every member is a volunteer, including firefighters, EMS responders and support staff; a 45-member auxiliary raises money and feeds crews at scenes.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for burn permits, call volume, budget. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
