North Hero's volunteers serve the island town, with mutual aid from the towns around it. Daytime coverage is thin because many members work off the island.
The department is founded. Chief Mike Murdock's grandfather was one of the founding members.
The idea of a new station is first raised.
Twelve volunteers drill every Monday night; the most the department has ever had is 24. Its needs include 24 air-pack bottles at the end of their 15-year life and a 30-year-old tanker. Two suppers a year are its main fundraisers.
Voters approve a $4.5 million bond for a new fire station and town garage.
Ground is broken on 16 March for a 7,000-square-foot station with exhaust removal, sprinklers, more office space and a training area, beside a separate public works building. It replaces the building the department has used for 52 years.

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame.
