History

Norwich's volunteers provide fire protection and first-response medical care; the town buys ambulance transport under contract. Each October the department takes fire safety programmes to the town's nursery school and childcare centre.

  1. 1920

The Norwich Fire Department begins protecting the town.

  2. 2001

The department starts providing emergency medical services, through its F.A.S.T. Squad.

  3. 2025

Three members are promoted, one to captain and two to lieutenant, and six firefighters enrol in the Vermont Fire Academy's recruit school.

Norwich in Windsor County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 1 here, 27 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Money

The town's Fire/FAST budget covers the department and the ambulance contract; $639,195 is requested for fiscal 2027, up 5.1%.

Fiscal year 2027, as requested
Ambulance contract $188,783
Fire chief's wages $88,138
Firefighters' wages $32,000

Three of the Fire/FAST lines in the town's budget.

Fire/FAST budget, by year
FY2027, requested $639,195
FY2026, budget $608,294
FY2025, budget $588,765
FY2025, actual $533,386

The Norwich Fire District is a separate body that runs the village water system; its budget is not included.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for joining, burn permits, call volume. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
