History

Pittsfield's volunteers handle fire and vehicle rescue, and assist White River Valley Ambulance's crews at medical scenes. With the town's fire fleet modernised, the town now puts smaller sums into reserve.

  1. 2025

New stabilisation struts and an air-bag lift system for vehicle rescues. Three members take the one-day Vermont First Responder course. The 2008 Ford rescue truck is sold for $35,000, which goes back to the town for a new capital reserve fund. ARPA money buys the department a snowmobile.

Pittsfield in Rutland County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 1 here, 37 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Money

Pittsfield Volunteer Fire & Rescue has its own fund in the town budget, supported by town taxes and the department's fundraising.

2025
Bazaar food and silent auction (profit) $5,581
Annual coin drop $3,913

The department's two fundraisers in 2025.

Sale of the 2008 rescue truck
Returned to the town as a new capital reserve fund $35,000

Not earmarked: kept for unexpected building repairs or equipment failures.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for joining, burn permits, call volume. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
