History

Proctor's volunteers work from the station on Main Street. Beyond calls, the department meets more than a hundred times a year for training, maintenance, cadet nights and community events.

  1. 1898

The Proctor Volunteer Fire Department is formed.

  2. 1923

The department's first motorised truck, an American LaFrance, arrives. It has never left the department.

  3. 2020

Incidents from December 2019 to November 2020, among 112 meetings and events. Three members finish Firefighter I and II despite Covid.

    47 calls that year

  4. 2022

Incidents from November 2021 to November 2022. A truck committee starts planning one truck to replace Engine 2 and Tanker 1, and a Mortimer Proctor Fund grant pays for a communications tower on the east mountain water tank building.

    39 calls that year

  5. 2023

Incidents from November 2022 to November 2023, a large increase. The department marks its 125th anniversary and shows off the 1923 American LaFrance after motor restoration. A new engine-tanker is ordered: 1,800 gallons and 1,500 gpm, due April 2025.

    80 calls that year

Proctor in Rutland County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 1 here, 37 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for joining, burn permits, budget. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
