History

Putney's department answers fires, alarms, storms and medical calls; its first responders handle medical emergencies and Rescue Inc. provides the ambulance. The department was reorganised in 2024 under an interim chief, and a town advisory committee has been studying its long-term model.

  1. 1903

The department's own page dates its service to Putney from 1903.

  2. 2006

The present fire station is built on Carl Snyder Drive.

  3. 2024

Requests for service from July 2023 to 3 April 2024, a shortened year: members also logged over 5,114 hours of training, maintenance and public education. Brian Harlow becomes interim chief; fire service resumes on 25 May and EMS on 24 July.

    564 calls that year

  4. 2025

A new cardiac monitor and defibrillator, helped by a $10,000 gift from the Putney Volunteer Firefighters Association. Plans for fiscal 2026 include finishing the fire house's second floor and planning Engine 1's replacement.

Putney in Windham County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 1 here, 29 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for joining, burn permits. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
