History

Rochester's volunteers meet twice a month, once to plan and once to train and work on the trucks. The Easter pancake breakfast is their biggest fundraiser.

  1. 2013

The current fire station is built.

  2. 2023

Members drill with Killington Rescue, State Police and a trail group for rescues on the Velomont Trail.

    45 calls that year

  3. 2024

Donations from a fundraising letter buy new jaws of life and cordless tools; less than a week after training, members use them at a call.

    45 calls that year

  4. 2025

Calls rise 18%. In October the department starts a first response and rescue team, which answers 12 calls in its first six weeks.

    54 calls that year

Rochester in Windsor County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 1 here, 27 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Money

The fire budget is modest: $63,200 proposed for fiscal 2027, plus $11,800 for the new rescue team.

Fiscal year 2027, as proposed
Salaries $10,000
Supplies and repair $8,000
Property and auto insurance $7,500
Bunker gear $7,000
Hoses $4,000
Radios and pagers $4,000

The largest lines in the town's fire department budget.

Fire department expenses, by year
FY2027, proposed $63,200
FY2026, budget $58,350
FY2025, actual $90,473
FY2025, budget $58,050

FY2025 ran over on truck maintenance: $44,871 against $2,500 budgeted.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for joining, burn permits. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
