Tinmouth's volunteers answer structure, wildland and chimney fires, crashes and entrapments, and support law enforcement and area rescue squads. If 9-1-1 is down, someone is at the fire station on 802-446-2460.
1967
The department is formed. Its first truck is an old 750-gallon oil truck with a portable pump; its first pumper, a 1947 model, came from Connecticut.
1969
The Community Church burns on the corner of Route 140 and Mountain View Road. The church is rebuilt on the green across the road, and in the 1970s a new firehouse goes up where it stood; the old Grange building, the first firehouse, becomes the "Old Firehouse".
1998
The firehouse gets a small addition and a new shell.
2025
A hard start to the year, with several structure fires in Danby. Two grants, for wildland fire gear and a gear washing station, and a Tinmouth Community Fund grant for a commercial warming oven. The department joins a statewide emergency management drill.
Tinmouth in Rutland County. Every fire station in the county is marked —
1 here, 37 in neighbouring towns, which is
who turns out on a mutual aid call.
Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and
village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into
the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the
boundary itself.
Money
The department is a nonprofit with its own books; the town gives it $25,000 a year, and the supper, raffle and tag sale bring in much of the rest.

Burning
Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.
