History

Waterford's volunteers train almost every Tuesday night and respond around the clock, to structure and brush fires, crashes, hazmat, extrications and medical calls, alongside their mutual aid partners and the ambulance service.

  1. 1985

The department is founded; its charter members joined between September 1985 and September 1986. One of them, Howard Jones, is still active 38 years later.

  2. 2022

Members log about 780 hours on calls, 685 in fire and EMS training and 420 on maintenance and meetings.

    127 calls that year

  3. 2023

Three high school students move up from the cadet program to probationary membership. The bylaws are revised in August.

  4. 2024

On 5 March voters approve a new tanker, up to $495,865, by 203 to 96: $220,865 in cash and $275,000 financed over up to seven years.

Waterford in Caledonia County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 1 here, 14 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Working here

The department welcomes members from Waterford and neighbouring towns, and runs a cadet program for younger members.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for burn permits, budget. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
