History

Until 2025 Weathersfield was protected by two nonprofit volunteer departments under contract to the town, Ascutney and West Weathersfield. They now form a single town department, with Mychael Spaulding as deputy chief and Josh Dauphin, West Weathersfield's chief for 15 years, as assistant chief and fire warden.

  1. 1956

The Ascutney Volunteer Fire Department is founded; Rodney Spaulding is among its first members, and serves as chief from 1976 to 1995.

  2. 1995

Darrin Spaulding succeeds his father as Ascutney's chief.

  3. 2023

In the year to June, Ascutney answers 397 calls and West Weathersfield 160. West Weathersfield's auxiliary is dissolved after 55 years.

  4. 2024

Chief Darrin Spaulding dies on 9 April, aged 59, after 44 years with Ascutney; his sons Mychael and Jackson serve on the department. In the year to June, Ascutney answers 353 calls and West Weathersfield 218. Ascutney takes delivery of a 2,000-gallon Dingee tanker, and a $51,000 federal grant buys West Weathersfield new extrication tools.

  5. 2025

In August the two departments merge into the Weathersfield Fire Department, and Josh Compo is appointed its first municipal chief. Its rescue licence is extended to the whole town.

Weathersfield in Windsor County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 2 here, 26 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Money

The town's Fire & Emergency Services line funds both stations; most of it comes from property taxes.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for joining, burn permits, call volume. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
