History

Windsor's department answers 911 calls in town and in its contracted towns, but most of its ambulance work is transfers between hospitals; ambulance revenue covers most of its budget. It also runs swiftwater and technical rescue teams.

  1. 2023

In the year to June the department's incident categories add up to 1,705, including two swiftwater rescues.

  2. 2024

In the year to June the incident categories add up to 1,714. The 1999 ladder truck is taken out of service for good and a search for a replacement begins; a federal grant buys a pumper-tanker to replace a 30-year-old engine and a 33-year-old tanker. Two van-style ambulances replace the old ones. The swiftwater team works the floods, and the technical rescue team stands by for ice rescues at the April eclipse in Pittsburg, New Hampshire.

Calls

Ambulance calls make up most of the work: about seven in ten incidents in fiscal 2024.

Windsor in Windsor County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 1 here, 27 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for joining, burn permits, budget. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
