History

Woodstock Fire/EMS is the town's fire department and its primary ambulance, with contracts to cover parts of Pomfret, Plymouth, Reading, Hartland and Bridgewater. It also runs inspection programmes for short-term rentals and rooftop solar.

  1. 1975

    The ambulance service is established.

  2. 2016

Woodstock loses a grade on its ISO fire-protection rating, raising some insurance premiums by up to $500; the department sets out to win back two grades.

  3. 2022

Fire calls in the calendar year, plus 826 EMS calls and 84 building inspections. The remodelled and enlarged emergency services building nears completion: with two to four people on duty around the clock, a truck now leaves in under two minutes, where it once could take up to twenty.

    271 calls that year

  4. 2024

Fire calls in fiscal 2024, among 1,352 calls in all including 964 EMS events. The department buys a new ambulance and three cardiac monitors, certifies a full-time member as a paramedic, and trains 40 residents in CPR.

    308 calls that year

Calls

Fire alarms and calls for other departments lead the fire calls; the ambulance answers three times as many again.

Woodstock in Windsor County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 2 here, 26 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for joining, burn permits, budget. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
