History

Addison's volunteers stay a long time: the chief has 42 years in, and a charter member nearly 64. The department raises money through pancake breakfasts and an annual fundraising letter.

  1. 1961

    The department is established.

  2. 2024

A record year. Charter member Buster Grant has the Addison County Firefighters Association's Senior Firefighter award named for him. Five junior members join, the most in years. Fifteen new MSA air packs go into service, bought with a $114,000 FEMA grant and about $6,000 from the department; some of those they replace were over 20 years old. Larry Blacklock, a 53-year member and former first assistant chief, dies in October.

Addison in Addison County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 1 here, 22 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Money

The town pays the department an assessment and saves toward a new pumper; the department's own budget covers operations and gear.

2025 (town budget)
Fire department assessment $41,000
Firehouse maintenance $15,000
Fire department fund (pumper) $12,000
Insurance $9,000
Dispatching $1,400
Fire alarm annual fee $1,000

$79,900 in all, up from $69,900 in 2024, mostly for firehouse maintenance.

FEMA air pack grant, 2024
SCBA purchase (actual) $120,663

Paid for with a $114,000 Assistance to Firefighters grant and a 5% department match.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for burn permits. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
