The department's one station, renovated in 1978. The 2025 annual report says it has deteriorated and no longer meets the department's needs; studies, concept designs and the committee's meetings are posted on the city's fire page. Source

History

Vergennes' volunteer department answers for the city and three neighbouring towns, and keeps a full roster at a time when many departments can't. Its station, renovated in 1978, is the big question now.

  1. 2023

A Dubois & King assessment of the fire station, with mould, asbestos and lead surveys.

  2. 2024

VIA produces concept designs and budget options for renovating or replacing the station.

  3. 2025

More than 185 calls. The department buys two used trucks in excellent condition, a 100-foot tower ladder and a pumper-tanker, and dedicates the ladder to Michael Collette, a member for more than 60 years. Deputy Chief Matt Fraley is named Chief Officer of the Year by the state and county firefighters' associations.

    About 185 calls that year

  4. 2026

In February the city manager sets up a committee from the four towns to weigh renovating the station, building a new one or adding a satellite station; in March the city applies for congressionally directed spending. The department also begins a community risk reduction programme with Fire Safe 802.

Vergennes in Addison County. Every fire station in the county is marked — 1 here, 22 in neighbouring towns, which is who turns out on a mutual aid call. Boundaries and water from VCGI; fire district lines are not town lines, and village districts and contracted coverage cross them. A town line runs out into the lake, so the shoreline here is the water drawn over the boundary, not the boundary itself.

Burning

Vermont requires a Permit to Kindle Fire from the town’s Forest Fire Warden for anything larger than a campfire — except where snow covers the ground at the burn site, or the fire is at least 200 feet from anything that will carry flame. Wardens can suspend burning outright when fire danger is high. Who to ask locally is recorded department by department; where it is blank below, the fire department itself is the place to start.

Not recorded yet

Nothing is written up here for joining, burn permits, budget. Not because it does not exist — because nobody has typed it in. If you know this department, tell us and it goes on the record with its source named.
